Annual Breeder Awards: Holistic Breeder
In this episode of The Breeders Brew, Sara is joined by Holistic Breeder Award winner and Rising Star finalist Jacquie Mullin. Jacquie’s journey to breeding her long-awaited litter hasn’t been straightforward, but her open mindset, willingness to learn, and proactive use of nutrition and reproductive tools paid off. From trusting her instincts when others said otherwise, to using premium supplements and refusing to cut corners on testing, her story offers powerful lessons for breeders at all levels. Isobel also joins us in this slightly shorter episode to share her nutritional insights—despite some technical gremlins along the way.

How to Choose the Right Stud Dog: What Most Owners Get WrongIt’s not just about looks or lines — here’s what really matters when selecting a stud and owner you can trust. It’s one of the most important decisions in your breeding journey, and one of the most misunderstood. Choosing a stud dog isn’t just about finding a boy that’s available, looks the part, or has an impressive ad. It’s about selecting the right match, with the right owner behind him, to protect the health, structure, and future of your line. We have a really exciting set of Breeder Brief Files - long, gritty, double length podcast episodes that deep dive into topics including this. This blog shares some important lessons we share in the "Stud Options Breeder Brief File". If you want to get your hands on the full audio, join the Brew Crew now for instant access. We’ll walk you through the biggest mistakes breeders make when picking a stud, what to look for beyond the surface, and why the right owner matters just as much as the right dog. 1. Choosing a Stud Too LateIf your bitch is already in season and you’re frantically searching for a dog, you’ve left it too late. This is how most corners get cut — and it’s how breeders end up compromising. The best stud owners (the ones who care, educate, and guide you) are often booked months in advance. Finding a stud should be a conversation that starts before you need it. Sometimes, a year or more ahead isn’t too early. Planning ahead gives you time to evaluate health tests, temperament, compatibility — and the person behind the dog. It means you’re making a decision based on values, not panic. And that’s where good breeding begins 2. Confusing Good Looks with Good BreedingJust because a stud looks impressive doesn’t mean he’ll improve your line. Ask yourself: What are you hoping to achieve from this litter? If your bitch has a weaker topline, don’t pair her with a dog that has the same. If her coat texture isn’t ideal, find a boy that corrects it. This is how you breed forward. Two pretty dogs don’t always make pretty puppies — especially if they share the same faults. The smartest breeders aren’t looking for a match, they’re looking for a compliment. A stud should elevate what you’ve got, not just duplicate it. 3. Ignoring the Stud OwnerHere’s the bit no one talks about: You’re not just choosing a dog. You’re entering into a partnership with another human. The stud owner should be someone you trust — someone who wants to support you, not just take your money and disappear. A great stud owner will:
Stud Dog, or Stud Partner? This decision should never just be about "the dog in the photo". It's about the bigger picture — the dog, the owner, the pedigree, the values behind it all. The right stud owner can become one of the most important contacts you have as a breeder. And if you’re not sure where to begin, or what questions to ask, you’re not alone. Inside our Brew Crew mentoring club, we’ve created a full Breeder Brief episode on exactly this topic. It’s packed with practical questions, examples, and red flags to help you choose your stud with confidence. Every breeder needs a Dream Team. When it comes to breeding, ‘success’ isn’t just about knowledge. It's about having the right people around you and knowing how to select them. As we explored in our latest Spotlight Session, Building Your Dream Team, having a strong, reliable breeding network is essential for navigating every litter's unique challenges. No two breedings are the same: no two pregnancies, no two litters. Even with the same girl and stud, the journey can change dramatically. Unexpected challenges are inevitable, but having the right team can turn a potential disaster into a manageable detour. Drawing on both our personal and professional experiences (with Isobel, Canine Nutrition Coach, and Sara, Canine Family Planner), we shared our fundamental method to identify, nurture, and grow your breeding team. We also introduced the 3B Model, a practical lens that covers aspects including the ‘Brain, Breed, and Background’ that can be applied in almost all situations. It allows breeders to evaluate everyone in their circle, from stud owners to vets, mentors to fertility clinics. Why does a 'Dream Team' matter so much?!Sara shared her traumatic experience of having to make a life-saving decision for her Bulldog, Patsy, at just 57 days gestation. It was a decision not fully supported by her vet but made possible through the guidance of a trusted breeder peer. Without that support, Patsy may not have survived. Similarly, Isobel reflected on the importance of her breeding team when faced with a singleton pregnancy in her Dachshund. She needed critical decision-making support when her regular vets did not fully understand the risks. In both our stories, the takeaway is clear. You need people in your corner, not just in your circle! People who understand your breed, offer experienced, proactive support, and genuinely have your dog's best interests at heart - and guess what? We're here to help. Applying the 3B modelAt the heart of building your dream team is applying the 3B Model:
This model applies to all your team members, including stud owners, mentors, vets, and fertility clinics. We also highlighted the biggest red flag to watch out for: oversimplification. If someone makes dog breeding sound easy, be cautious. True experts acknowledge the complexities and help you navigate them safely. The right Dream Team evolves over time...As your breeding journey evolves, so will your dream team. People move away, retire from breeding, or are no longer the right fit. Breeding can be isolating, but being intentional about who you trust keeps you resilient, proactive, and prepared. When you find the right network, when your ethics, expectations, and experiences align, the journey becomes infinitely more rewarding and actually much easier too.
